Chapter Meeting Report: Wednesday, October 11, 2006.
Theaux LeGardeur, "Big Gunpowder Falls: The Best Tailwater in the Mid-Atlantic?"

October 12, 2006.

Theaux owns and runs Backwater Angler, a full service fly shop just minutes from the 'Powder. He's seen our premier Eastern Maryland tailwater through all its humors and faces.

Theaux tantalized NCC-TU at its October meeting with information about the Gunpowder - perhaps the region's finest tailwater with more than 3,000 fish per mile. He spoke at length about the hatches, proven techniques for the stream, and -- of course -- its wild and beautiful fish.

With bugs emerging virtually all months of the year, and a constant water temperature in the low 50's the Gunpowder is a year-round fishery. The average size of the fish, predominantly brown trout, has increased recently. Long leaders - more than the fly itself - are the name of the game here, according to Theaux and his six full-time guides.

Using slides and maps, Theaux walked the audience through the various sections of the 'Powder. He also showed videos on the Gunpowder, including 30 suspense-full seconds of a sulphur mayfly crossing the stream. According to Theaux, you will be able to view this and other video later this year on the Backwater Angler website.

Theaux's mayfly video has an hypnotic effect!

Our October Chapter Meeting was also our Annual Meeting, at which NCC-TU traditionally holds elections for its Board and Officers. For the complete story on election results, please see our News Page. You will notice the Vice President's position is still vacant. Contact us if you want to know how you can serve, and help keep NCC-TU alive and relevant.
