SHENANDOAH BROOKIES

Join us for a day of small stream fishing in Shenendoah National Park. Wild Brook trout abound in these small mountain streams and the park is beautiful. Come out to fish with Shenendoah fishing experts from NCC-TU and learn more about these wonderful little streams. Our efforts will be focused on the many quality streams in the Old Rag/White Oak Canyon area of the park.

We will be meeting at the Frost Diner in Warrenton, VA at 8:30 am on Saturday morning for some AMAZING breakfast and to assist the group with choosing the water to fish that best suits them. Remember that there is generally some hiking involved in the Park fishing but to varying degrees of difficulty. We can help you choose the best stream for your fishing ability and physical fitness. There is something for everyone!

We will bring some maps to guide people, then head out in small groups to fish from there.

Come 'Meet Us Half Way' to Shenandoah NP to find fellow anglers and conservationists from the DC area and have a great day of fishing.

When: Saturday, May 19 at 8:30 am

Where: Frost Diner, 55 Broadview Ave, Warrenton, VA (45-60 minute drive from downtown DC)

To RSVP and for more details, contact Josh Young (843-437-8520) or John Graebner (202-251-0479).

MAY CHAPTER MEETING

Wednesday May 9, 2012: Maryland's Wild Trout. Tom Starrs of the Maryland Chapter of Trout Unlimited has spent years locating and fishing for wild trout in Maryland. Tom told us about the streams in Maryland where he finds native brook trout and other species too. We were amazed where he finds these beautiful fish!

CHAPTER SHAD REPORTS

During the shad run (usually April thru mid-June), our chapter sends out reports of fishing conditions at Fletchers Cove and elsewhere as we receive information. If you know someone who might want to receive these reports, email us with "SHAD" in the subject line and give us their name and email address. If you received shad reports last year, you don't need to resubscribe to get them in 2012.

2011 FISHING FOR WILD BROOKIES ON THE
RAPIDAN RIVER

NCC-TU scheduled a trip for the Rapidan River with Tom Sadler as our guide for Saturday October 22, 2011. We met Tom in Madison, VA around 09:00 and fished for most of the day. Brian Durkin was the trip organizer.

This trip was a great success. See Brian's Rapidan trip report, complete with beautiful fall pictures.

CHAPTER OUTING
to the GUNPOWDER RIVER
Saturday, April 28, 2012

John Graebner reports that this outing had a nice turnout, about 20 people, and "nearly everybody caught fish." According to John, "It was the beginning of the sulphur hatch, but they seemed to be hitting on everything." You can see the group photo on the Backwater Angler website. Backwater Angler's Theo LeGardeur, the Gunpowder Riverkeeper, welcomed the anglers and gave them advice on where to fish and with what flies to use.

Izaak Walton League and NCC-TU Work to Promote Fly Fishing
By Tim Jorgensen

On Sunday April 15, twelve students from the Johns Hopkins University came down to the Bethesda-Chevy Chase Izaak Walton (B-CC IWLA) facility in Poolesville MD to learn how to fly fish. They were instructed by their student leader, Matthew Jorgensen, as well as NCC-TU members Dalton Terrell, John Graebner, and Tim Jorgensen. Instruction included a short lecture, casting instruction on the lawn, and fishing in the pond. The weather was good, and all twelve students caught fish -- mostly sunfish and a few bass. An excellent time was had by all, and many expressed interest in taking up the sport. The students heartily thanked the NCC-TU members for both instruction and the use of NCC-TU fishing equipment. They hope to return for another outing during the fall semester.

NCC-TU members Patrick O’Hare and Tim Jorgensen also provided fly fishing instruction at the Earth Day Open House at BCC-IWLA on Saturday April 28. This event was open to the public and included displays and demonstrations from various conservation organizations. Those who were interested in fly fishing were given a quicky fly fishing lesson by Patrick and Tim and then set loose on the pond to catch some fish. Most participants caught at least one sunfish. Tom Mann and Mark Snyder were also involved with this Earth Day event last year. This annual BCC-IWLA event is something that NCC-TU should keep on its calendar. In the future, it would also be beneficial if NCC-TU had its own booth at this event to promote coldwater conservation, Trout in the Schools, Fly Fishing Camp, etc.

The leadership of BCC-IWLA requested that we run a fly fishing clinic specifically for its chapter membership, similar to what we did for the Johns Hopkins students. This clinic will be held on Saturday June 23. It will be advertised in the IWLA newsletter and promoted at their upcoming chapter meetings, with NCC-TU listed as the sponsor of the event. NCC-TU membership brochures will be provided to all participants. We are still in need of more NCC-TU members to help out with the instruction. (The only ones who have committed so far are, Tim and Matthew Jorgensen, and Tom Mann.) Anyone who would like to volunteer should contact Tim Jorgensen.

It would not be difficult to adapt the fly fishing clinic that we offer to the Johns Hopkins students into a Boy Scout merit badge. National TU and BSA have a fly fishing merit badge curriculum that we could offer to local Boy Scout troops (see attached). I am fairly confident that BCC-IWLA would open their facilities to us for a merit badge program, since they already have Boy Scout troops meeting and camping at their facility, and they offer their own shotgun targeting shooting merit badge to the Boy Scouts. But we would need a critical mass of NCC-TU volunteers to pull this off. If the NCC-TU leadership has any interest in offering a Boy Scout merit badge in fly fishing, I would be willing to investigate it further and put together a proposal for the board’s consideration.
