Special Casting Clinic

1:30-4:00p – FLY CASTING CLINIC
with ED JAWOROWSKI and DAVE ROTHROCK.
Widely recognized professional casting instructor, Ed Jaworowski, author of award-winning casting books, The Cast and Troubleshooting the Cast, is, according to Lefty Kreh, “the best teacher of fly casting I have ever known.” Dave Rothrock, of Salmo-Trutta Fly Fishing School of Pennsylvania and Austria, was on the first place casting team in the Northeastern Qualifier of the 2004 National Fly Fishing Masters Tournament.

This 2.5 hour small group casting clinic with personal instruction will be an extended opportunity to improve fundamentals and specialty techniques, and is held in Candy Cane City Playground in Rock Creek Park 1/2 mile south of East-West Highway on Meadowbrook Lane (7901 Meadowview Drive, Chevy Chase, MD). Continuous Activities:

ROD AND GEAR SWAP: Consign your quality bamboo and graphite rods, reels, and other fishing gear. We’ll help you set a value on the tackle and try to sell it for you. If it sells, the Show receives 20% of the selling price. Whether you consign any gear or not, check out the bargains and interesting rare gear.

FREE FLY TYING DEMONSTRATIONS: Award-winning master fly tiers DAVE ROTHROCK, TOM BALTZ, and Capt. MIKE CRITZER will demonstrate fly-tying in the Exhibit Hall.

FLY CASTING CLINICS: One-hour small group fly-casting clinics with personal instruction will be offered indoors at the show on the half-hour from 9:30a until 4:30p. Clinics will include sessions for Beginners, Kids, Women, Parent & Child, and Distance Casting. (See Scheduled Events below for specific times.) The fee for adults is $35 and for kids under 17, $25. AUTHOR’S CORNER: A selection of fishing, fly-tying, and conservation books, videos, and DVDs will be available for sale throughout the Show. Authors will be available to autograph and discuss their books.

GRAND SWEEPSTAKES RAFFLE: Grand prize is a guided smallmouth bass float trip on the Potomac River with Mark Kovach Fishing Services, www.mkfs.com. Many other quality raffle prizes. $5.00 per ticket, 3 for $10.00, and 10 for $20.00. Drawing begins at 5:05p. Winners do not have to be present, but charges will be assessed to winners if prizes need to be shipped.

EXHIBITOR BOTTLE RAFFLES: Each exhibitor will conduct a bottle raffle. Tickets $1.00 each, or 6 for $5.00. Drawing will begin at 4:45p. Winners do not have to be present, but charges will be assessed to winners if prizes need to be shipped.

SILENT AUCTION: Great items like guided fishing trips, fishing tackle, art works and much more at bargain prices. Auction closes at 4:40p. Winners do not have to be present, but charges will be assessed to winners if prizes need to be shipped.

with ED JAWOROWSKI: “Casting Fundamentals.” This is a 1.5-hour small group master class with personal instruction by internationally recognized expert fly casting instructor and author, Ed Jaworowski. The session will be indoors. Bring your own casting outfit. The number of class participants will be limited to six students. 9:30-10:30a – FLY CASTING CLINIC with Instructor Kiki Galvin: “Casting for Women.” Women will enjoy an hour of personal instruction from of one of the area’s top professional female anglers. 10:00-11:30a – FLY-TYING MASTER CLASS with Capt. MIKE CRITZER: “Saltwater Flies.” A 1.5-hour small master class with personal instruction by one of the region’s leading saltwater tyers and Chesapeake Bay and Mid-Atlantic Coast guides. The class includes materials for tying a selection of flies. Bring your own vice and tools. Basic fly-tying skills and own tools required. Fee $50 with advance registration and payment required. 10:15-10:45a – AUTHOR’S CORNER: CHARLIE GELSO & LARRY COBURN will sign and discuss the 2nd edition of their classic book, GUIDE TO MARYLAND TROUT FISHING, the Catch-and-Release Streams.

10:30-11:30a – SPEAKER: DAVE ROTHROCK on “Fly Fishing 101.” There is no better way for a beginner or out-of-practice fly fisher to kick off the day than by getting grounded in the fundamentals. This is a practical presentation on basic tackle, rigging, and what to do out on the water, by one of the region’s best known and respected fly fishing guides and instructors.

10:30-11:30a – FLY CASTING CLINIC with Instructor TOM SADLER: “Parent / Child Casting.” Here’s a chance for parents to learn fly-casting with their kids from Tom Sadler, a lifelong fisherman, conservationist, and instructor. He’s a FFF Certified Instructor who has studied fly casting with Joan Wulff. Fee $35 (the fee includes as many kids as you have); advance registration recommended. 11:45a-12:45p – SPEAKER: ED JAWOROWSKI on “The Changing Face of Saltwater Fly Fishing.” A colorful survey of the growing number of species, locales, and new tackle, flies, and techniques that are shaping this expanding field in today’s world. Focused mainly on our East Coast from New England down to Florida, this handsomely illustrated program provides a savvy look at the evolution of the sport by one of its leading practitioners.

Bean Fly Fishing School in Virginia and the Wulff School of Fly Fishing in New York. Fee $35; advance registration recommended. 1:00-2:00p – SPEAKERS: Capt. EIVIND FORSETH, and WOUNDED WARRIORS, http://www.projecthealingwaters.org: “The Project Healing Waters Success Story.” From humble beginnings at local Walter Reed Army Hospital, this organization is spreading its effective program to military hospitals and VA facilities from Maine to California. Come learn about the impact its fly casting and tying classes, and fishing outings have on the medical and emotional rehabilitation of our wounded military anglers. It will make you proud, and answer your questions about how you can help.

1:30-2:30p – FLY CASTING CLINIC with Instructor DAVE ROTHROCK: “Casting for Distance.” One hour of personal instruction from Dave Rothrock who is one of Central Pennsylvania’s top trout guides and instructors. This clinic is geared for the intermediate to advanced fly-caster. Dave teaches how to maximize the distance of your cast. Fee $35; advance registration recommended. 1:45-2:30p – FREE FLY CASTING DEMONSTRATION with ED JAWOROWSKI: “The Most Common Casting Faults.” A casting lesson for every fly fisher, regardless of your knowledge or experience, by the teacher Lefty Kreh calls “the best casting instructor I’ve ever seen.” Ed will demonstrate and talk you through the fundamental DOs and DON’Ts of effective casting to help you place your fly right where you want it to go. Practical knowledge we can all use.

2:15-3:15p – SPEAKERS PANEL: JEFF KELBLE, Shenandoah Riverkeeper, ED MERRIFIELD, Potomac Riverkeeper, and MIKE HELFRICH, Lower Susquehanna Riverkeeper: “Our Local Premier Smallmouth Bass Waters: By Our Riverkeepers Who Know Them Best” If you haven’t enjoyed smallmouth bass fishing in the Shenandoah, Potomac, and Lower Susquehanna Rivers, you’ve overlooked some of the finest smallmouth waters in our region. Their smallmouth fisheries, however, need our help to defend and protect them from the growing threats of pollution. Get the facts from the Riverkeepers who are out there everyday working to keep our treasured fishing waters clean and healthy.

2:30-3:30p – FLY CASTING CLINIC with Instructor DUNCAN McGRATH: “Casting for Kids.” One hour of personal instruction from Duncan McGrath who is well known at Fletcher’s Boat House as one of the top fly-anglers. He generously shares his enthusiasm for fishing with kids. This is a clinic for all kids (under 17). Fee $25: advance registration is recommended. 3:30-4:30p – SPEAKER: ED JAWOROWSKI on “Trout Fishing 301.” Are you matching or mis-matching the hatch? What do you do if there isn’t a hatch? Ed will share his secrets about sight, color, tying, and presentation, and other current topics for the intermediate and advanced trout chaser. The talk will be illustrated and cover practical applications for a wide variety of water types, from our eastern and western waters to unique runs of Alaska and Argentina.

3:30-4:00p – FREE FLY CASTING DEMONSTRATION with DUSTY WISSMATH: “Fly Casting Basics.” This demonstration by a master caster covers the basic essentials of the fly cast, as well as lots of helpful hints to make you a better fly-caster.

3:45-4:30p – AUTHOR’S CORNER: SANDY BURK, environmental and conservation educator will sign and discuss her award-winning book, Let the River Run Silver Again.

4:30-5:50p – FLY CASTING CLINIC with Show Instructors for Project Healing Waters participants. This one hour and 20 minute clinic is reserved for personal instruction for our wounded warrior special guests from Walter Reed Army Medical Center.
