ACTIVITIES FOR YOUNG PEOPLE AND FAMILIES
Our natural environment depends on clean water and healthy and productive fish and aquatic life habitat. The future of these resources will be in the hands of the next generation, which hopefully will be guided by responsible conservationists and anglers. If we do not expose, inform, and motivate our youth to protect the wonders of nature that mean so much to us, we are likely to see them diminished and eventually lost.
This show offers a variety of opportunities for youth and families to explore, experience, and learn to appreciate many facets of our natural environment, including:

“Fly Fishing 101” presentation by Dave Rothrock at 12:00p in the Fishing Forum on 2nd floor. Getting started in fly fishing is easier than you think.

Noted author, artist, and activist, James Prosek, presents his latest children’s book Bird, Butterfly, Eel about the fascinating migration journeys of birds, insects, and fish in Destination Theater on 1st floor at 12:30p.

Youth and adults invited to engage James Prosek in an informal conversation about sharing the wonders of nature, fishing, and friendship in Destination Theater 1st floor at 2:30p.
Award-winning author and environmental teacher, Sandy Burk, will be at the Exhibit Hall booth of the National Conservation Training Center in Shepherdstown, WV, to show you how the restoration of American shad in the Potomac River has made possible the successful return of the bald eagle!
Join Jim Greene and his crew at the Exhibit Hall booth of Trout Unlimited’s Trout in the Classroom program to find out how kids in regional schools learn about the life cycle of trout while hatching eggs into trout fry in classroom aquariums.
Visit our Children’s Book Nook library corner in the Meet the Authors booth to examine great books for children about fishing and the environment; pick up a copy of our children’s book list in case you want to order any. Exhibit Hall booth of "Meet the Authors."
Visit the Exhibit Hall booth of Living Classroom/Discovery Creek's program to see how kids get involved with restoring American shad in the Potomac River, while they learn about the life cycle of these amazing fish.

Free fly and spin casting instruction for kids offered in the Exhibit Hall at 10:30a, 11:30a, 1:30p, 2:30p, and 3:30p (loaner rods available).
Free fly-tying instruction for kids in the Exhibit Hall at 11:00a and 2:00a (tying equipment and materials provided).
Try your luck and test your skills with a fly or spinning rod at the Casting Challenge (loaner rods available).
