FEBRUARY OUTING:
Thursday, February 25, 2010
BIG HUNTING CREEK, Thurmont, MD

Hey! don’t miss our first outing of the season to Big Hunting Creek. We will meet at 10:00 am at parking lot across Park Headquarters (see below) fish until we freeze or get hungry. It’s a great opportunity to experience the Catoctin Mountain Park in winter to start the new fly-fishing year. Expected hatches are the little black stoneflies in #20-#16, and possibly some larger brown stones in #16-#14.

Flies and other fly-fishing equipment may be purchased at the Urban Angler or Orvis stores in Bethesda or Tyson’s Corner but call ahead to verify they have what you need.

Pictures and recipes for both dries and nymph can be found in the Guide to Maryland Trout Fishing—The Catch and Release Streams, by Charles J. Gelso and Larry Coburn.

From Washington, DC take the George Washington Memorial Parkway north to I-495 beltway to I-270 north 27 miles to Frederick, MD. Take Route 15 for 17 miles north to Thurmont, MD. Take Route 77 West (the exit sign is marked Catoctin Mountain Park). Travel approximately 2 miles west on 77 and turn right at the sign for Park Headquarters into the parking lot. (There are 2 parking lots across from each other, one on each side of Route 77.) Drive through the two stone pillars and metal gate into the parking area for Headquarters. (The pillars are labeled Camp Peniel.)

See NCCTU Outings Page for details and requirements for participants before contacting Craig Johnson at (301) 520-2908 or email him to reserve a place on the trip.

SAVAGE RIVER STATE FOREST

Savage River Watershed Association (SRWA) is looking for adult volunteers to help plant 1,000 red spruce trees this spring on pm, and . Red spruce will be planted along high quality streams in the Savage River State Forest because native hemlocks, Tsuga canadensis, are being killed by an invasive insect called the Hemlock woolly adelgid. The shade from conifer cover will help keep water temperatures low, a critical factor for native brook trout survival. To volunteer, email the Savage River Watershed Association or call Ron Boyer at 301-895-3686.
